VoLTE not available on iPhone 6 with Rogers

Hi there. My son has an iPhone 6. He’s with CHATR in Canada which is owned by Rogers. They’re removing 3G and have said I need to upgrade to a VOLTE phone. I thought iPhone 6 is capable if VOLTE but option isn’t available to me in settings.

The iPhone 6 supports 4G LTE frequency bands.

If you look at

Wireless carrier support and features for iPhone in the United States and Canada - Apple Support

there are many references to VoLTE that refer to a footnote saying "VoLTE is available only on iPhone 6 or later." That footnote links to the archived, no-longer-updated article

Whether you can use the iPhone 6 with your carrier's VoLTE service will depend on them. There are a lot of LTE frequency bands, and many iPhones support a lot of them – but not all of them. Your carrier's network likewise might support some bands and not others.

When Australian carriers shut down 3G service, it turned out that one of them had a network that relied heavily upon a single LTE band: FDD-LTE band 28. Some iPhones originally intended for the U.S. market supported a number of LTE bands, but not that one, and so didn't work well with the carrier's updated network.

I've done a little research on this and it seems some iPhone 6 phones may not work with VoLTE with some carriers in Canada. From what I was able to learn, some carriers configurations prevent the phones from connecting to VoLTE on their networks. It's possible the authors son has such a phone. I remember some people in either New Zealand or Australia having the same issue. A lot has changed on the LTE side since the iPhone 6 was released.

One of the Apple Support articles had a broken link to the ChatR site (stray ")" in the URL). Here's the fixed version: ChatR Mobile .

I couldn't find anything on the ChatR site saying specifically which phones are compatible with the service. There is this.

From one of the Support pages: "Our network is compatible with devices that use the following frequencies … LTE: 700MHz, B12 | 850MHz, B5 | 1900MHz, B2, B25 | 1700/2100MHz (AWS) B4, B66 | 2600MHz, B7". I'm no expert on "LTE vs. FDD-LTE vs. TD-LTE", but I think they're saying their network uses bands 2, 4, 5, 7, 12, 25, and 66.

Based on the iPhone 6 - Technical Specifications, it looks like

  • Every iPhone 6 supports bands 2, 4, 5, 7 and 25.
  • No iPhone 6 supports band 12 or band 66.

it says iPhone 6 not supported when you punch the model number in here.

iPhone 6 was released in 2014, 11 years ago. A lot has changed in 11 years. It really is time to replace the phone. It can't run anything higher than the highest version of iOS 12 and many many apps are no longer supported on that very outdated iOS version.
