Saved photos in my library sometimes get replaced by duplicates of other images

So from time to time, when I see a meme or a funny picture, I add it to my Photos library for later reference. I went looking for one today and I couldn't find it. What I did find was another picture I saved appearing twice. I think this has happened before.

So I'll have Image1 and Image2, then at some point Image2's picture becomes the same as Image1.

I tried restoring the oldest version of my library from Dec 2022, but it's the same in that one.

Is this something other people have encountered and do we know what causes it?

Is this something other people have encountered and do we know what causes it?

No. I have maybe 40000 pictures in multiple Photos Libraries, and I haven't seen this happen. Especially since the "swap" seems to have happened years in the past, it seems more likely that the image wasn't really saved when you though your were saving it. What do you think?
