Cannot get Apple Card virtual card number

When tapping on 'Card Information', either from the Mobile Wallet directly, or from 'Settings' app, the screen with the virtual card number and other card information briefly flashes and then disappears, going back to the previous screen.

I was able to grab a quick screenshot of that screen, but when I tried using that card number (and CVV), it was rejected.

It is an iPhone SE with Touch ID, but Touch ID is not configured (I use passcode every time it asks for an unlock).

What can be the cause of this?

All other cards from all other banks do not show complete numbers. The banks app may show card details, but Apple Wallet only show complete details of Apple Card and Apple Cash. Both require Face ID to access the information.

It could be a bug introduced with a recent update. It seems unlikely though, but certainly I’ve seen stranger bugs. If her iPhone is first gen it was introduced in 2016 (almost 10 years ago) and can only be updated to iOS 15, not the current iOS 18. This could certainly be a forced limitation by Apple and the banks. If she is using second or third gen. (Introduced in 2020) it could still be a limitation requiring Face ID. Only the recently released 4th gen uses Face ID.

You can ask Apple Support. They may have more information to shed light on the issue. If you do learn anything from contacting Apple Support, it’d be great if you replied here. It most certainly will help other community members. Thanks and good luck.

Yes. iOS is at the most recent update.

This is the Apple Card (credit card). There are three additional users on this card (my wife and children). The card works perfectly fine on other devices. The only one experiencing this problem is my wife, on her iPhone.

I can identify only two possibly significant differences between the three of us who use the card regularly and normally, without any issues, and my wife, who is experiencing this problem. The three of us have iPhones with Face ID (two iPhones 16, one iPhone 13), while my wife as the SE with Touch ID, and she never set up the Touch ID, always using passcode to unlock.

The other possible wrinkle (although I doubt this has any bearing on this), my wife doesn't have a Social Security number, which usually adds an additional layer of hassle when dealing with banks and credit card issuers. In the case of Apple Card, she cannot set up Apple Cash (which requires SSN), so the cashback that she accumulates cannot be used, and we periodically have to call Goldman-Sachs (Apple Card support, to be precise) and request them to manually transfer that money to her bank account. I can't imagine how this would affect the behaviour of the Wallet app (or Settings). I could possibly see how lack of Touch ID setting might be an issue, if a bug was introduced into the Card Details screen authentication requirements at some recent update, that now exclusively requires biometric authentication, and doesn't allow the passcode unlocking. In the past, this worked pefectly fine with the passcode; the problem started appearing rather recently (a few months or so).

She needs to setup Face ID because the details of the account are Face ID locked. If you notice when you request the card details, it does a Face ID check. If Face ID fails, it does not ask for passcode. There are no exceptions to the requirements. They are requirements of the issuing bank and they do not make exceptions for individuals.

Apple and issuing banks periodically update the security requirements of the electronic wallets. I suspect when you wife updated her device, the security was restricted to use of Face ID.

Her phone does NOT have Face ID. Only Touch ID.

Just to make it clear; Apple Pay works perfectly fine for her with all payment cards. She has AmEx, Discover, a debit card from our Credit Union, and Apple Card. When making a payment at a store, she manually opens the wallet (double-click on home button), selects a card, it prompts for the passcode, she enters the passcode, and the phone is ready for payment at the terminal. This works with her Apple Card as well.

The only problem she has is when trying to get Apple Card information, to use the virtual card number for online (or phone) payments, when you need to copy the card number and details, or give them over the phone. This used to work perfectly fine for years (ever since I got that Apple Card and shared it with my family). It only stopped working recently, and the problem manifests itself as described above. In other words, other cards are all working fine. It is just the Apple Card, and only when trying to see the virtual card number page.

I was wrong about the iOS version; she did NOT yet update to 18.5. I walked her through the update and after installing it, she was able to get to the virtual card information through Settings for the Wallet. However, when opening the Wallet app and going to the Apple Card, then tapping on card data, it still briefly flashes the data screen and reverts back to the main card screen.

It does seem that the virtual card number that she can now get through the settings works for online and phone purchases.

I might reach out to Apple again to find out why the Wallet up doesn't work as it should.

This is exactly where the problem happens. Opening up the Wallet app, then tapping on the Apple card, then the little card icon in the top right corner, the card info screen briefly flashes and then disappears.

Doing this from the Settings -> Wallet & Apple Pay -> Apple Card -> Card Information works. She is prompted for the passcode, enters it, and the screen shows up correctly.

I'll call Apple again later and tell them this. Let's see what they say this time.
