Mac Pro (early 2008) Display screen goes black

Mac Pro (early 2008) 2.8 GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon - Was working but has sat unused for about a year.

When I recently booted it up it seemed to be OK, but after about 10 mins. the screen goes black. Has El Capitan installed. I have reset PRAM and SMC but did not fix. I have also tried another monitor but screen still goes black. I suspect it's the GPU - ATI Radeon HD2600 XT 256 MB? Is there any way check the GPU?

if you are still using the original replaceable display module that shipped in your Mac, it has had a remarkably long life. The original cards got beastly hot despite their fans, and burned them selves up.

Do NOT replace it with an identical card. There are far better used cards available. But any card you buy needs Mac firmware on board, or it will not show boot screens or diagnostic, Recovery, or safe mode screens.

The 5770 is a good common replacement, and runs cooler. Drivers first shipped in MacOS 10.6.5 so anything after that works great.
