Why are the Apple Card Daily Cashback percentages different for separate purchases at the same store?

Why are the Daily Cash Back percentages different when shopping at the same store for separate purchases. It’s 1% when purchased on line and 2% when purchased in store. This vendor/merchant is a grocery store.


This occurrence happens at other vendors/merchants as well.

All merchants are 1% unless they offer Apple Pay. If you use Apple Pay (Tap-To-Pay) with your iPhone then you get 3%. If the merchant is an Apple Card partner, you get 3% when using Apple Pay. If you swipe the card, insert the chip, or use virtual card number, you only receive 1% because you didn’t use Apple Pay.


Occasionally partner run promotions offering greater discounts. For example I received 5% off my booking/stay using bookings.com, Apple Card and Apple Pay.
