audiomxd high cpu memory mac mini 4 software feb 2025

Tried some old stuff about the library/preferences/audio .... nooo workeeee

The real issue, I plugged external speakers into my BENQ display earphone plug instead of the FRONT earphone plug on the MAC mini4 . The sound works fine (selected BENQ output), with outrageous CPU and memory degradation.

The FIX was to switch to the front earphone plug on the MAC mini4.

Apple, you have an issue with 'sound' going to a display interface.

I just witnessed this same behavior on a 2023 iMac (Identifiers: iMac (24", M3 2023) - MQRQ3LL/A* - Mac15,5 - A2873 -  8206*). macOS 15.3.2 (24D81). I rebooted my iMac, the problem did not reappear.

My AirPod Pro 2 case containing my AirPods was in one port. I had just attached my iPad Pro (3rd Gen), and awakened the iMac from sleep via TouchID. I first noticed upon opening a Finder window, I could not select items in the Favorites list. But I could open other apps via the Dock. Starting a terminal window I invoked Top and saw audiomxd using 100%+ CPU. I rebooted the iMac, and behavior is back to normal.

For my Mac mini M4 Pro with Sequoia 15.3.2, cpu usage peaks when the Mac OS is in Locked mode. My audio is through the HDMI 2.1 on external display with speakers. After logged in, I can see from the activity monitor the AUDIOMXD using up 98% to 100% CPU. After a while when in LOCKED mode, the casing of the Mac mini M4 Pro is very warm to the touch. But when being used normally, the Mac mini M4 Pro is almost room temperature.

Hello,

I observed the same issue at MacBook Air M3 with MacOS 15.4.1 and a LG UltraGear 27GS85QX display.

The Macbook is connected with usb-c to a Ugreen 4K HDMI Switch and the display with HDMI to the switch.

A simple switch of the audio output device from internal speakers to headset and backwards f.ex. helps, to bring the memory and cpu usage to normal level.

Greetings, Chris.

I'm having a similar issue with my Macbook Air M3 (running Sequoia 15.5). I have a dual monitor setup using a Thunderbolt docking station (Dell WD19TBS). My Macbook is always in the closed position. The first monitor is connected via DisplayPort on the docking station, and the second monitor is using the Thunderbolt pass-through port on the docking station (USB-C to DisplayPort).

None of my monitors have speakers or audio outputs that I know of. I am purely using the Macbook's speakers. I also have the Macbook's bluetooth permanently switched off.

About every 3rd / 4th day during the evenings (when I'm not using the Macbook), the Macbook seems to have restarted (while it should be in sleep mode), most of my running apps have been closed and I'm asked to open them again. In this state, some of the apps stay unresponsive, in which case I have to restart the Macbook again anyway.

According to the Console -> Diagnostic Reports the issue seems to be audiomxd: "90 seconds cpu time over 102 seconds (88% cpu average), exceeding limit of 50% cpu over 180 seconds".

Any suggestions?
