Universal Control Randomly Disconnects - Solution

Hi Everyone,

I think I finally found a solution to the universal control issues that have been plaguing all of us. This issue randomly started last week and I was scouring the internet since then. I just happened to try this and it seems to be working. It seems to be the incoming connection firewall setting for universal control.

  1. Go to settings - Network - Firewall - Options.
  2. Find the "Universal Control" in incoming connections.
  3. Click on Universal Control to highlight the row.
  4. Click the minus sign to remove the connection.
  5. Click OK.
  6. Restart the computer.

After you restart and move your iPad near the MacBook, universal control fires up normally and the universal control incoming connection reappears in the network settings.

Give this a try. It worked for me.

Hi AeroJoker,

It turns out that the problem is with the location of the wifi and bluetooth antennas on each device. I have an M1 ipad pro and a macbook air that are literally 18 inches away from each other. After months of troubleshooting, I figured out that when I align the two machines just right (the macbook is in its vertical stand, upside down and the back facing the ipad), I've never had a single connection issue again. Try repositioning your devices. It worked for me.

Thank you for the feedback. My universal control disconnected again out of nowhere this morning. I tried all of the software tricks, but nothing worked, so I went into the engineering specs for these stupid machines. The WiFi antenna for the iPad is next to the camera and the WiFi antenna for my MacBook is on the back right. It turns out I was blocking my iPad antenna! Once I shifted my iPad such that I had a direct line of sight without the monitor getting in the way, it reconnected and hasn’t dropped since. It may just be an interference issue.

Hello! I have tried all the steps, but I still keep having the same issue.

I have an M1 Mac Mini and an M2 Air that disconnects every two or three hours. This started after I updated to Sonoma. I tried the following steps:

  • Recommended Steps: 1-6 above
  • Moved My Mac Mini under my Laptop and turned it upside down
  • Removed all VPNs
  • Removed all known Networks and reconnected to a single network
  • I reinstalled the Sonoma Software
  • I did hard resets
  • I turned off all incoming connections, Network, and Bluetooth and turned them back on
  • I ran diagnostics to see if any of the hardware was acting up
  • I Made a rebootable USB with Ventura, completely erased my hard drive, and reinstalled Ventura
  • Now, every time the connection drops, I have to turn off and back on my Mouse because it glitches it

On top of this, my quick actions are not working, but that's a problem for another thread.

I reached out to Apple Support and gave them some data from my computer. It's been months, and there has been no fix.

Just went through these steps (my own post about the issue is somewhere around here today). This seems to have fixed it for now. I will try manipulating interface on Music app on the laptop and see if it triggers the disconnect. Arggggh.....it did...hitting the play button on Music on the laptop breaks the UC link to the laptop. The preference setting just won't stick.
