Hi - thanks for this. I deleted preferences, Used single 4 pin to 9 pin firewire cable to t’bolt converter. Restated with Pram resfresh. Tried iMovie - no change. iMovie sees my Sony DCR HC 96 Mini DV cam but still no device control.
Tried Premiere pro - Capture window shows Stopped - indicting recognition of a capture device but no device control or capture possible.
Tried freeware Lifeflix DV importer (free version) - useless just wants me to buy the expensive upgrade.!
I did manage to have success though by using Quicktime's New Movie Recoding function and selecting the DV CAM in the record button drop down in the window that opens. You have to start the tape rolling first and no scene breaks of course but Im happy I can at least capture picture and sound from my wedding and family videos now.
Quiicktime > File > New Movie Recording > (Window opens) Select DV CAM option from record button > start Camera manually.
Cheers

Whilst you are waiting delivery of your 4 pin to 9 pin FireWire cable you could try using QuickTime Player to capture your tape.

See the section ( 2) that concerns connecting an external camera .
This method does not have device control , so you will have to start the tape playing by using the camcorder controls.
Also this method provides one long clip instead of multiple clips coinciding with scene breaks.
At the bottom of Apple's supported cameras list there is a footnote that says that most tape based cameras are supported. They won't be displayed on the list.
You had mentioned "iMovie 11" in your post, so I was not sure whether you might have been using an earlier 32 bit iMovie version.
You didn't mention what camera brand you are using or what Mac model you have, but you should connect directly from the camera to your Mac with the appropriate cables and adapters without running it through an external drive. I assume that you are connecting from your Firewire port on the cam. You would need a 4 pin Firewire to 9 pin Firewire (FW 800), and then a FW 800 9 pin to Thunderbolt adapter. You might also need a Thunderbolt to USBc if the latter is the socket that you Mac has.
You might find this thread helpful:

You might also try turning on the camera to get the tape running before importing. To cover the bases here's the Apple Help Menu item that explains how to connect a tape based camera to your Mac:

In addition, Apple recommends that footage be imported into the Photos app and then it can be accessed in iMovie from the Photos item in the iMovie project sidebar. So you might try that method instead of a direct import into iMovie.
Since you Mac recognizes the camera, another way to import your tapes that I mentioned in my previous post is to import into your Mac via the Image Capture app if Big Sur still includes that app in the Applications folder. You can also import into QuickTimePlayer.
Importing from tape into iMovie can be somewhat hit or miss with iMovie 10. It usually works, but not always. . It worked better with iMovie 9, so if you have an older computer that runs that version you can try importing into iMovie 9.

Can you confirm whether or not you are using iMovie '11 (iMovie version 9)? That version is a 32 bit app that won't work on the 64 bit Big Sur operating system. That might explain why you cannot get a direct import.
If the Image Capture app is still available on your Mac with Big Sur, try importing your footage to your desktop on your Mac instead of directly into iMovie.

Thanks Rich
I am using iMovie 10.2.5 on Big Sur. So I don't think its a 32 bit problem. The interesting thing here is that Apple still maintains that capture from MiniDV is possible but the list of recognised cameras from iMovie doesn't contain any MiniDV cams. Nonetheless, when connected up via firewire to Thunderbolt iMovie recognises the cameras but simply won't allow device control - not can I override this manually. There are You tube videos showing it works on later versions of iMovie. I'm thinking it might be due to the fact that Im converting Firewire 400 to 800 via a portable hard drive. I have ordered a 4 pin to FW 800 cable to minimise the possibilities of signal error and will repost if I have any luck. Thanks
Another easy thing you can try first is to delete preferences, as sometimes that cures import problems. To delete preferences open iMovie while holding down the Option and Command keys and select to delete preferences in the box that appears. iMovie will open in a new library. Reopen your old library to get back to your projects.Deleting preferences is a safe procedure
that will not cause data loss or disruption to any of your projects. Now see if you can import your tape footage.

Great! Glad you got it working. 😊
Could you do me a favor? Since you are running Big Sur, which I am not, would you check your Applications folder and post back whether or not the Image Capture app is listed there? Thanks in advance.

Hi Rich
Yes Image Capture install there but nit doesn't recognise DV Cam.
Thanks for your help.
Ah. Thanks. I wasn't sure whether Image Capture had been preserved with the new upgrades.
